Ranked Battles are my preferred style of play in World of Tanks. Why? Because players want to win. It’s that simple.

Any player who reaches tier X has put in considerable effort into the game. They are experienced players. And when you toss ten tier X players into a matched game based on player skill, you will have very balanced games (most of the time).

The problem with Random Battles is it’s in Wargaming’s best interest to have extremely lopsided games. They want quick games because quick games translate to high profits for the developer. Think about it: consumables are ‘used up’ the moment the game ends regardless of win or lose, or how long the game lasted. So, if you use Lend Lease Oil to give your tank a few more points of horsepower, it is consumed whether the game lasts 3 minutes or 15 minutes. That being said, the quicker the game, the higher the profit for the company. And I’m not faulting Wargaming for deliberately bad match making, I’m just pointing it out so that players understand what they are up against.

Ranked Battles are different in that the games are truly balanced (at least as much as they can be). Players on both teams work hard to establish their individual military ranks based on their contribution to each Ranked Battles game. Players determine their own value based on their damage dealt and their spotting damage. Those are the heavy-hitting stats for player ranking. The better you do in both of those categories, the higher your ranking.

If you don’t already have a tier X tank to play in Ranked Battles, it’s hard to explain how much more enjoyable the games are. You don’t have players running off solo on the map. No YOLO players. And when you move to take advantage of an enemy misstep, your teammates are right behind you, win or lose. Sometimes all it takes is for one player to expose his tank to 3 or 4 enemy tanks. Sometimes it’s deliberate. He might get shot straight to hell and destroyed, but the enemy has just exposed 3 or 4 of their tanks to extremely experienced players on your team, and your teammates will proceed to tear them apart.

Want a more enjoyable World of Tanks game experience? Earn your way up to a tier X tank and then play Ranked Battles. You won’t regret it.
