With the exception of Premium tanks and the vast majority of tier X tanks, most tanks have modules that can be purchased with standard tank experience. The modules are, essentially, improvements to various aspects of the tank such as new tracks, new gun, new turret, etc. With each researched module that is purchased and installed on your tank, the tank’s overall performance will improve and the tank itself will be more effective in battles.

Some modules are quite expensive in terms of experience and (sometimes) in regards to the amount of credits they cost. When you purchase and install a module, you can immediately sell the previous module for a partial refund of its purchase price. If you don’t refund the previous module the moment you purchased the new one, your depot will become cluttered with various tank parts that you most likely will never use again. It’s best to sell the old during the exact moment you purchase the new.

Some of the more expensive modules are compatible with the next tank on the tech tree. When this happens, rest assured your purchase is not wasted as you will already have the module when you research and purchase the next tank in the tech tree line.

You can use either Free Experience or Tank Experience when purchasing a new module. The game will automatically use your Tank Experience first before dipping into the Free Experience pool that you have accumulated. In my opinion, it’s better to use the actual Tank Experience and not your Free Experience when purchasing improvement modules for your tank. But that’s up to you. Most players (including me) don’t enjoy playing stock tanks as they are usually have poor mobility and weak guns.

It's always best to hover the most over a module before you actually click to purchase it. If the module you want requires a different modules to be purchased first, there is a tool tip that will let you know. This wasn’t always the case. It used to be that you could purchase a new engine for your tank (an expensive one) and then when you tried to mount it on your tank you got an error stating that you need to purchase the heavier duty tracks before you can mount the new engine because it’s too heavy. The same thing used to happen with guns and turrets as well. However, somewhere along the line of game development, Wargaming decided to offer a warning before purchasing a new module for a tank. The warning makes it clear that even though you might purchase this fancy new engine, you won’t be able to mount it until you upgrade your suspension/tracks module.
